THE UNIVERSITY OBSERVATORY

The Observatory of the NKUA hosts a 0.4-m Cassegrain reflector inside the 5-m dome. It is equipped with the first robotic and fully remote-controlled telescope operating in a Greek University. Such small telescopes are used for specialized research projects, for trying novel ideas, for testing new auxiliary instruments, for teaching and training people on the general practice of astronomy and astrophysics.

The Observatory of the University is located on the roof of the Physics Department, housing the 0.4 m f/8 telescope since 1999. The observatory, apart from a 5-m dome, includes a control room and a small apartment, used for overnight accommodation for the observer and for the occasional foreign visitors.
