The idea of establishing a university in Greece emerged during the Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution. Officially founded on 14 April 1837, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is the oldest university not only in Greece, but also in the Balkans and the wider Eastern Mediterranean.
