MEMBERS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY NKUA ARE APPOINTED ASM COUNTRY AMBASSADORS TO GREECE

Two members of the Department of Biology NKUA, Assistant Professor Katherine M. Pappas and post-graduate student Panagiotis Glekas, were appointed after deliberate evaluation by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) as ASM Country and Young Country Ambassador, respectively. The judgement for the main country ambassadorship was based on remarkable academic experience, demonstrated leadership and commitment to the ASM mission. The positions have a three- and a one-year duration correspondingly, and are amenable to extension pending a formal review.  The Young Ambassador position was claimed for the first time in Greece!

ASM is the oldest and largest scientific Society in the Life Sciences. It numbers 48,000 members in 173 countries that engage in over 27 scientific disciplines ranging from classic microbiology to modern molecular and systems biology. Ιt publishes numerous books and 17 monthly journals. The Country Ambassador Program lies at the center of ASM’s efforts to foster the dissemination and development of microbiological knowledge around the world. It strengthens ASM’s connection within the local scientific community and offers networking opportunities for Ambassadors to collaborate with fellow Ambassadors at a global level. Lastly, it funds projects aligning with the overall ASM mission and encourages new ASM member subscriptions at reduced rates.
