The Θ.Υ.Ε.Σ.Π.Α. (Summer Course in Modern Greek Studies) was established in 1988 in celebration of the 150 years of the founding of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, following a decision by the University's Senate. The programme's purpose is to familiarize foreign students (Hellenists) with Modern Greek Culture, the Modern Greek Language, Literature, History and Art. It is aimed at undergraduate or postgraduate students and members of teaching staff of departments at foreign universities which teach subjects related to Greek Studies.
This programme is the largest organised in Greece, both with regard to the duration of studies and number of participants. It is supported by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sports, the State Scholarships Foundation, the Greek Parliament, the Greek National Tourism Organisation and bodies of Local Authorities.
During its operation 6,251 people from 78 countries worldwide have participated in the program.
