Professor of Government and holder of the Lloyd M Bentsen Jr Chair in Government/Business Relations at the Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, USA, James K Galbraith, has been awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Department of Economics, School of Economics and Political Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
The award ceremony was held on Monday, 8 June 2026, in the University’s Great Hall.
Proceedings opened with welcoming remarks by Professor Sophia Papaioannou, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, International Relations and Extroversion.
Next, Yanis Varoufakis, Professor of Economic Theory at the Department of Economics, delivered a speech on the honouree’s academic work and personal qualities, entitled ‘James K Galbraith: The Economist Who Highlighted the End of “Normality”’.
The formal conferment followed, with Professor Georgios Dotsis, Chair of the Department of Economics, reading the official citation. The Dean of the School of Economics and Political Science, Professor Nikolaos Eriotis, then invested the honouree with the academic gown of the School.
The ceremony closed with the awardee, Professor James K Galbraith, giving a talk titled ‘The End of Hegemony and Economics’.
