The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens took part in commemorations in Missolonghi marking the bicentenary of the Exodus, one of the defining episodes of the Greek War of Independence.
The anniversary brought together public figures, academics, and visitors from across the country to honour the city’s defenders, whose stand has come to symbolise the enduring struggle for freedom and self-determination.
Proceedings began with a procession from the Metropolitan Church of Saint Spyridon to the Garden of Heroes—a sacred place of remembrance for those who lost their lives during the siege—and continued with a memorial service in a solemn and reflective atmosphere.

The University was represented by the Rector, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, together with Professor Spyros Vlachopoulos, a member of the Administration Council; Professor Stathis Efstathopoulos, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation; Professor Assimina Antonarakou, Chair of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment; Professors Charalambos Vlachopoulos, Xenia Argeitaki, and Pantelis Stergiannis, members of the academic staff; as well as members of the administrative staff and students, underscoring its ongoing commitment to the study and public understanding of history. Now firmly established as a symbol of resilience and sacrifice, Missolonghi continues to host annual commemorations, ensuring the legacy of the Exodus endures today.
