The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens participated in the 112th Rectors’ Conference of Greek Universities, hosted by the University of the Aegean on the island of Samos.
During the meeting, the Rector, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, together with the Vice-Rectors and the Executive Director, stressed the urgent need for increased funding to support the maintenance and renovation of university teaching and research facilities. They pointed out that the University of Athens faces particularly pressing challenges, given the size and age of its estate, with many buildings requiring immediate attention.
They also called for targeted amendments to the legal framework, in line with proposals put forward by a majority of Greek universities, particularly to resolve practical difficulties arising from the new system governing faculty recruitment, appointments and promotions. In addition, they emphasised the need for the timely replacement of university staff – including Teaching and Research Academic Staff, Laboratory Teaching Staff, Special Technical Staff, Special Teaching Staff, and Administrative Staff – as they retire each year.
Finally, they highlighted the academic community’s call for the restoration of previous salary levels, the need for additional funding to ensure universities can recruit the necessary security staff, and the proposed integration of the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (ASPETE) into the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which is still awaiting the necessary legislation.
