On Sunday, 31 May 2026, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will release the eighth issue of ‘University of Athens: The Newspaper of Science, Education and Culture’, in partnership with the Sunday edition of To Vima.
The lead story, ‘Middle East Crisis: The Energy War and the Risk at the Strait of Hormuz’, features analysis by four academics at the University of Athens on how escalating tensions in the region are shaping Greece’s energy future.
Within the lead story:
-How the stop-start dynamics of the so-called Third Gulf War are acting as a risk multiplier for the Greek economy
-How Greece’s dependence on geopolitically unstable regions affects its access to key energy resources
-What recent developments mean for long-term international, European, and Greek politics
-Why renewable energy sources matter, the implications of small modular reactors for Greece, and the scenarios they may create
Also in the May issue:
Interview: George Velmahos – What it would take to achieve a genuine brain gain, and when trauma centres in Greece will become operational. ‘Leading scientists will not return to Greece simply for a job’, says Dr Velmahos, Professor of Surgery at Harvard University and Chief of the Trauma, Emergency Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care Division at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. ‘They need the opportunity to build teams, centres, institutes, and to work within a supportive research environment.’
Health: What is driving rising resignation rates among nurses – A global challenge now increasingly evident in Greek hospitals. Evidence paints a stark picture with a significant proportion of nurses leaving the profession early.
Space: ARTEMIS II: Back to the moon and beyond – The legal framework regulating space exploration from the early space age to today. What international space law governs, and the conclusions drawn from the Artemis mission to the moon.
Environment: Lakes under pressure – Why are our lakes turning green? Does excessive nutrient enrichment of water bodies represent nature’s stark response to intense human activity?
Published as a supplement to the Sunday edition of ‘To Vima’, the University’s newspaper brings science, education, research, and the perspectives of young scholars into the public sphere. It offers accessible coverage of social and political issues, showcases work conducted at the University of Athens, and follows international developments that shape academic and scientific discourse.
