
Stella Tsani, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has been elected by the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) as a Member of the Multidisciplinary Experts Panel (MEP), representing the Western European and Others Group (WEOG).
IPBES is an intergovernmental body established under the auspices of the United Nations to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services, with the aim of supporting informed decision-making at all levels. The Multidisciplinary Experts Panel is a core scientific body of IPBES, responsible for overseeing the scientific and technical functions of the Platform, including the development, review, and quality assurance of IPBES assessments and other deliverables.

The election to the MEP is conducted by the IPBES Plenary following nominations by member States and regional groups, reflecting both scientific excellence and interdisciplinary expertise. Membership in the Panel is internationally recognized as a significant distinction, acknowledging sustained contributions to research, policy-relevant knowledge, and global environmental governance.
Associate Professor Tsani’s election reflects her extensive research and policy engagement in the fields of sustainable development, environmental and resource economics, climate and biodiversity policy, and the science-policy interface.
This important distinction further strengthens the international presence and contribution of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Department of Economics to the global efforts addressing biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and sustainable development.
