Cultural Society (POFPA)

The University Club Students' Cultural Society aims at supporting and promoting the artistic activities of the students of Athens University and constitutes a place of collective expression and creativity. The students come into contact with works of art and are encouraged to create their own works. The University Club allocates areas which are suitably equipped with modern mechanical equipment to enable the members of the society to work and create.

The Students' Cultural Society of Athens University (POFPA) operates under the supervision of the Public Relations Office and they collaborate in organizing various cultural events in which students who wish to participate can do so.

The Students' Cultural Society is represented by a Managing Committee, which is selected in elections by all members of the Society.

Interested students can become members of POFPA by submitting a written application to the POFPA office, which is located on the mezzanine of the University Club (15 Ippokratous Street).

The Students' Cultural Society includes four sections: a) Theatre, b) Dance, c) Cinema and d) Photography.

 

a) Theatre Section:

 

The Theatre Section organizes acting, voice and movement classes, child theater classes, as well as other artistic events, with visiting actors and professors. The Section seeks to highlight through the work of its members the various dimensions of amateur theatricals, modern experimental theatre, classical repertory, and study of ancient drama on the basis of folk performances of traditional culture.

Each year, one or more theatrical performances are presented by every artistic team of the Theatre Section of the Students' Cultural Society. These performances take place in the small theatre of Kostis Palamas building and the History Museum (Old University) of Athens University (5 Tholou Street, Plaka). In addition, the Theatre Section participates in Greek and International University theatre festivals and in events organized by municipalities and other cultural organizations.

b) Dance Section:

 

The purpose of the Dance Section is to raise students' awareness of various aspects of greek folk culture. Dance is used as a mean to realize this aim. Students register and process all the elements that make up the Greek civilization, thus experiencing our traditional heritage.

Throughout the year, and on daily basis, the Dance Section organizes traditional dance lessons, with exceptional student response. The lessons are held in Room A, which is located in the basement of the University Club. In addition, seminars which show the true dance identity of different provinces of Greece as well as unforgettable homelands are held by experienced dancers.

The Dance Section also takes part in events held by other organizations throughout Greece and abroad. At the end of each academic year, it organizes a main dance performance with traditional costumes. This performance takes place in a central theatre in Athens, where admission is free.

c) Cinema Section:

 

The objective of the Cinema Section is to promote cinematographic education among students in order to make them knowledgeable film goers. Moreover, it gives them the opportunity to create so as to produce films which will socially elevate them as well as the Academic Community to which they belong.

These days, the Cinema Section has a full weekly programme of seminars (script - technique analysis - direction) screening of 35mm films and a video projector, which is improved and enriched on a daily basis, the seminars as conducted by older members of the Cinema Society, who voluntarily and with a lot of enthusiasm prepare a series of courses which apart from familiarizing students with the area of knowledge, motivate them to think and discuss.

Furthermore, this Section supports its members in producing 8 mm short films and digital video, by providing technical material and cinematographic equipment. It organizes events, such as "festival" and dedications.

 

The seminars are held in the Cultural Events Hall "IRIS", which is located on the ground floor of the University Club

d) Photography Section:

 

Artistic photography seminars constitute its main activity. These seminars are directed towards new as well as advanced students and are aimed at developing not only technical skills but also photographic perception, which is essential to the artistic appreciation of the photograph.

The seminars basically constitute a complete introduction to artistic photography, something which is accomplished by the projection of the work of important photographers, discussions related to the aesthetics of photography, as well as teaching its members the techniques and use of the dark rooms, where they can develop and print their photographs.

The courses are conducted daily in the University Club building (15 Ippokratous Street) and in the "Kostis Palamas" building (Massalias and Academias Streets). They are taugh by experienced older members as well as visiting photography professors. From time to time, and parallel to the seminars, photography campaigns to various parts of the city are conducted, in order to familiarize the students with the taking of photographs.
