RESEARCH

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a top research-intensive university where faculty, PhD candidates and researchers continuously challenge the boundaries of knowledge and publish their work in high caliber research journals. This intensive effort resulted to the ranking of the NKUA as the 1st among Greek Universities and 41st in the world Top Universities by Google Scholar Citations by Webometrics.

Research & development - individual and collective, funded and non-funded - is a priority for the Academic community aiming at:

  • improving our internal mechanisms for collaboration promoting and sharing of good practice,
  • contributing to the implementation of research projects at doctoral and postdoctoral levels by scientific groups and individual researchers of the University in collaboration with researchers of other institutions in Greece and abroad,
  • participating  as coordinator or partner in European and International research projects,
  • developing research skills by undergraduate and postgraduate students, who - as part of their studies - should also practice in laboratories and/or university clinical departments, participate in conferences with paper presentations, discussions, seminars, excavations, final written assignments etc, depending on their area of study, etc.,
  • increasing  engagement with business and industry and the identification, mapping, promotion and economic exploitation of research results, the safeguarding of intellectual property through the acquisition of patents and the establishment of spinoff companies.

Except from the research carried out in all Schools and Departments of the University, applied research is also performed in the 224 University Laboratories serving educational, as well as fundamental and applied research purposes.

In addition, University hospitals and Clinical Departments provide high quality health services, and contribute notably to the field of medical education and clinical research. Except from the 3 main University hospitals, clinical departments also operate in other hospitals of Athens (Attikon, Evangelismos, Hippokrateion, Laikon etc.).

Research & development - individual and collective, funded and non-funded - is a priority for the Academic community. Research can be also supported by grants, international and national funds, partnerships with public and private sector bodies, etc. Currently, there are more than 3,200 active projects, where about 5,000 to 8,000 researchers per year work full time or part time. The funding of these projects is essential for the research policy of the University, the reduction of young scientists’ unemployment and the decrease of the brain drain of our researchers.
